Um.

I know we don't talk about this, but I figured I should tell you that

Well.

Charlie kissed me.

[ And there is, unintentional but undeniable, a bright burst of joy.]

[Well, it certainly sounded like John liked it. And he wouldn't do anything without making sure the other person was openly and entirely on board with, certainly not to Charlie so.

How are you-- self evident and openly delighted, pass.

What was it-- utterly not his business.

Is he any-- hard pass.]

Well. [Like the flurry of pleased-confused-sentimental-curiouscuriouscurious didn't just tangibly happen.] Should I ask what brought that on?

I asked him to tell me if a suit looked good.

Then he offered to teach me a two step dance.

Then we stopped dancing and he stopped a little after me and he was very close.

[ A pause. ]

He asked if it was okay if he did.

I said yes.

[There's a soft pop of unexpected and silly jealousy, that John didn't ask him for help with clothing, but it's readily ignored.

He'd been curious if Charlie was light in his loafers, but it wasn't something you just asked. So there's a little gratification that he was right.]

That's very romantic, John, I hope you know.

It was. It was like something out of a movie.

[ A beat.]

I would have asked you but you're too encouraging.

[There's a bubbling of light amusement, that comes through as the echo of surprised laughter, a cheerful flourish of keys.]

I didn't say anything! But- you're right, I suppose. I'm glad Charlie could give you a less biased opinion. And- a good time, let's call it.

...yes.

[ He has no idea how to talk about this with Arthur. ]

I think it was good for him.

I can see that, actually. That he's- he's truly feeling that there is distance between yourself and the King.

[ That is- yes. It gives him hope in a lot of ways. Also- ]

I also don't think he's let anyone be close to him for a long time.

I'm not sure I would if I was in his shoes, either. We were only worried about the King getting to us for a few months, I can't imagine what ten years of him successfully doing that would do to someone's ability to trust anyone at face value.

[Especially when he knows the crisis Charlie has about being the only person left who even remembers it.]

And he trusted me.

[ The biggest leap of all, really.]

[And there's a sudden swell of vicarious pride from Arthur, to hear it.

Obviously he's never going to mention this to Charlie, that would be fucking mortifying, but the glow remains.]

I'm proud of you. For being so patient with him.

He was so happy.

[ And other things, but John's not going into those.]

Watching him be happy felt so good. And he was happy it was me.
