CHARACTER INFO

• Character Name: Arthur Lester
• Character Age: 34
• Character Canon: Malevolent (Podcast)
• Canon Point: Episode 43: The Witch.

• Character History: Wiki page!

• Character Personality: Provide information about their personality, both negative and positive aspects — with three of each. Give examples of how they've behaved this way. You do not need to provide an essay, but please submit enough to give a feel for the character.

— Positive Trait: Curious. Arthur is endlessly investigative, and always wants to know what's going on around him. He views everything as a puzzle that it has to be possible to solve, and he's actually quite good at finding the logic and reason behind seemingly disparate pieces of a puzzle. He's remarkably intelligent with a classical education, extremely analytical and able to make reasonable leaps to logical conclusions with limited information, and is willing to allow new information into his equations and completely change his mind on a theory with that in mind. As a private investigator he's also familiar with the more unsavoury side of humanity: he and his partner were primarily hired to recover missing persons, and Arthur's been shown to be able to anticipate other people's intelligence, and use it against them.
— Positive Trait: Empathetic. Arthur is a deeply compassionate person, and uses this to great effect over the course of his career. While he knows he has a history of being self-absorbed, he's also the kind of person who will treat baby babbles like a dialogue, who gives children his utmost attention and respect, who can relate on a deep and personal level to loss and make it a sincere dialogue. While he is a deeply private person, and won't share his own pain willingly or easily, he will use this pain with reckless abandon to connect with others and help them through their own. He'll also use his pain to try and offer compassion to others - he refuses to kill a wraith, instead making a bargain to release her, because she only existed because she was mourning the loss of her own baby when she stole a living one, and he will always try to engage with dialogue with someone that wants to kill him, rather than escalate to violence first.
— Positive Trait: Philosophical. Before Arthur was a private investigator, he was a pianist of prodigious capability. Music and poetry have always been his way of coping with the world, to express himself and his emotions and ground himself in the moment, and he's always eager to share poetry with people to help them as well; with empathy, with coping, with expressing themselves and finding ways to describe things through it. He's also a deeply philosophical person, and while he actively and aggressively eschews Catholicism, seeing it and its followers as something more akin to a sanctioned cult, he's not shown to have any major aversion to other religions, and even then still uses some of its teachings in his philosophies, where he can find a place to fit them that he doesn't utterly loathe (like as an example of how not to do religion).

— Negative Trait: Contrarian. In the face of being told what to do, Arthur is relentless in pursuing the exact opposite path to take. He is resistant to authority of all kinds, to the point that even being actively manipulated by an Elder God who is trying to get him to do something means said god is constantly required to rework their plan because Arthur's not having a bar of playing along. This happens with multiple gods. If he's forced to go along with something he doesn't want to do, he certainly won't directly undermine it, but he'll be furious and look for the first chance to escape it as soon as possible.
— Negative Trait: Stubborn. When Arthur sets himself on a course of action, he will see it through, come hell or high water. While he can be reasoned with, and is more than happy to negotiate if he knows he requires more information, when he's decided on a path he will commit to it no matter what happens - including to his own detriment. While this is a boon to some extent, in that it was what let him continue living after the losses of his wife and daughter - and even prevented him from being killed by the King in Yellow, since he was so determined to never forget the harm he caused his daughter - it's also a problem in that even he can't really defy his own stubbornness.
— Negative Trait: Hypocritical. As much as Arthur tries to be philosophical and objective about cases, his interpersonal relationships tend to suffer at the hands of some pretty intense hypocrisy. He'll endlessly spout the virtues of planning ahead, of thinking things through before you commit to an action: and then immediately ignore his own advice by jumping on the first impulse that catches his attention. He demands honesty from others but is violently private about his own life.

• Character Skills: Does your character have any particular skills that might help them in game? Maybe they have knowledge of firearms, carpentry, fishing, maybe foraging or how to make clothes. List them here in bullet-point form:

• Arthur's a private investigator! The majority of his skills are logical deduction, critical analysis, and intense observational abilities. He's also extremely well socialised, and can be quite persuasive.
• And a gun.
• However he's also a private investigator, so he is also trained in petty larceny skills such as lockpicking, sleight of hand and general stealth skills.
• Basic survival skills, from growing up in the Boys Brigade.
• Can touch a person's body and get mentally transported back to observe a few minutes of what happened before their death. Obviously nerfed but I wanted it on record.

• Character Inventory: Characters may bring THREE items with them. These can be items a character owns, but might not happen to have on their person when they are brought to this world. They may bring tools they may already own to help them survive, or cherished personal items. The clothes they're wearing do not count as a slot, but if they have really good winter coat at home, that would count as a slot.

— ITEM ONE: A Dunhill lighter, inscribed with "This Too Shall Pass". Canonically always within reach of him when he needs a light; nerfed to a regular lighter.
— ITEM TWO: A sacrificial dagger.
— ITEM THREE: A music box that he composed.

• Important Notes: Arthur is physically extremely fucked up; none of these will cause him major ongoing issues, but he's very obviously supposed to have died like six times already. He's also still distinctly emaciated due to a one-month coma and three spent in starvation torture.

Regularly visible scars: Friction burns around right cheek/temple/eye; missing top half of right ear; knife scar across throat; last knuckle of left pinky missing, replaced with wooden tip that is growing into his hand; human bite-mark below left pinky; puncture wound between third/fourth knuckles on right palm, electric burn scars on both palms; shallow but distinct puncture wound on base of skull, under hairline.

Other major scars: Slash in torso above waistline (only wound with professional care); three bullet wounds (two stomach, one heart) with exit wounds; small 2nd degree burn on left bicep; pale Lichtenberg tracks on both inner forearms; scar on right bicep from impact-related shoulder dislocation; two puncture scars on right thigh from compound fractures of femur; messy puncture wound in left shoulder, front; puncture marks through stomach, sewn haphazardly in front but untouched at back (entry); buckshot scars in rear right shoulder; chunk of flesh missing in right trapezium (human bite-mark); impaled through heart; six overlapping stab wounds in stomach, stitched up; vertical scar over intestines.

• Writing Samples: Players must provide TWO prose writing samples. These both must be log threads. Due to the fact there is no network in this game, 'network' or 'texting'-style threads will not be accepted.
